I have spoken with so many people over my 27 years in pharmacy. I have heard just about everything. Customers have shared their most happiest moments, as well as confided in me their most horrific events. Looking back over all of these stories, it’s clear to me that the human spirit cannot be broken.
I have learnt that if you just take the time to speak with someone, you soon find that everyone has a dark history they are trying to forget or a current challenge they are desperately coping with.
We all have inside of us an infinite amount of strength. We all possess an ability to face even the most difficult obstacles and to move through them with grace and tact.
The only problem is, we don’t all believe we can move past these burdens.
I don’t know why certain things happen to some people and not to others. What is clear, however, the way we cope with a situation is largely based on our reaction to it.
For instance, I have seen two people go through very similar situations, but cope so differently. One just kept giving the past event energy by focusing on it constantly and feeling sorry for themself. Whilst the other took the event to be like a ‘teacher’ and to serve as an opportunity to learn and grow emotionally.
Now, don’t get me wrong. Many people have horrific things happen to them which can’t be swept under the carpet as if nothing happened. Of course, proper support through counselling needs to be given to move through the trauma.
What I am saying is that in time everything can get better. Even the worst of situations can eventually bring some peace to the soul through forgiveness and letting go.
Illnesses are no different. Coping with chronic disease can cause a huge amount of stress in a person’s life. Ironically, it’s usually unresolved emotions from a past trauma that fester in the body that tend to lead to dis-ease. And so the circle goes round and round.
If you’ve had enough of chasing your tail and you really want to heal and get better, then it’s time to make that decision. Only you can do this. Not your doctor. Not your family. Just YOU.
Luckily, there is help and hope for you. You just need to reach out and ask for it. Working through the emotional wounds caused by a past trauma can often lead to tremendous healing.
Try to see what positive aspects have come from your negative event. Even if there is just a tiny glimmer of goodness, focus on that and turn it into a roaring flame over time.
Smile, even if you don’t feel to. Laughter always makes everything better. Always surround yourself with positive people also. We all need the human touch and there’s nothing quite like a hug from a good friend.
Do something nice for yourself each day and treat your body with respect. Let go of fear, shame, and guilt and be gentle with yourself.
Go within and listen to your heart. Find the reason you’re here at this time on Earth. Make your time count.
Inspire someone who has gone through what you’ve gone through. Show them your inner strength, leave the past behind and move forward to happier times.
You deserve to.
